The Kinks - (Lola Versus Powerman)
-->Comments Are Welcome/Comentarios Son Bienvenidos
You Don't Know My Name) número #16. The Kinks no serían menos...God Save The Kinks

The group was earlier known as Cass and The Casanovas when it was fronted by lead singer and rhythm guitarist Brian Casser back in 1959. Casser was a poor singer and the other members soon ousted him. He left to form Casey Jones and The Engineers (who briefly included Eric Clapton in their line-up). Later he became a TV actor and fronted another group Casey Jones and The Governors, which worked in Germany with some success.
Meanwhile back on Merseyside The Casanovas became The Big Three and soon established a good reputation as a live act playing loud R&B material with Hutchinson's unusually raucous drumming for the times. They often backed local solo singers like Cilla Black.
Their live sound is captured best on their Live At The Cavern EP, which is their most collectable disc. It features covers of Ray Charles' What'd I'd Say, Chuck Berry's Reelin' And Rockin', Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah and the group's own song Don't Start Running Away. They also recorded another live set at The Oasis Club in Manchester, but it never made it onto vinyl.
Eventually Brian Epstein dropped them from his management because of their wild behaviour! They moved to another agency but their original line-up split in November 1963 and it was left to Johnny Hutchinson to put together a new line-up with Faron (of Faron's Flamingoes) and another Flamingo member Paddy Chambers. The new line-up (C) recorded a live version of You Better Move On for the Live At The Cavern album. Chambers and Hutchinson didn't get on and Chambers left after a few months. He later joined The Dominoes (Kingsize Taylor's backing band) before forming Paddy, Klaus and Gibson. He was replaced by Paul Pilnick (formerly of Lee Curtis and The All Stars, he was later in Stealer's Wheel). This line-up (D) recorded a version of Sam Cooke's Bring It On Home To Me entitled If You Ever Change Your Mind, which was a good arrangement and their only disc to feature strings. Neither this or Sam Cooke's original version made the UK Charts, though The Animals later had a hit with it in 1965.
By 1964 The Big Three had split for good. By then Johnny Gustafson had joined The Merseybeats. He also released two solo 45s for Polydor in 1964 and 1965. Then in 1965 he worked briefly with Brian Griffiths as The Johnny Gus Set. Later in 1973 the two teamed up again with Nigel Olsson of Elton John's band and using The Big Three name recorded an album, Resurrection. It didn't sell and afterwards Brian Griffiths emigrated to Canada and Johnny Gustafson returned to his career as a session musician. His credits include albums with Roxy Music, Ian Hunter, Gene Pitney and Shirley Bassey. He was also on the original album cast of Jesus Christ Superstar.
Back in 1964 the band had one cut, Bring It On Home To Me, on Decca's At The Cavern (LP) compilation. In 1985 See For Miles reissued this compilation on vinyl with The Big Three At The Cavern EP added to it, and again in 1994 on CD as Live At The Cavern.
