Estaban formados por: Tony Catchpole (Guitarra), Alan Bown (Trumpeta), Geoff Bannister (Teclados), Robert Palmer (Voz), John Goodsall (Saxo), Robert Palmer (Voz), John Anthony Helliwell (Saxo), Vic Sweeney (Batería) y Stan Haldane (bajo y Voz). Se formaron en Inglaterra en 1964, recorrieron varios géneros musicales, jazz y blues, r&b, soul y psicodelia e hicieron música de calidad, transformándose como una banda de culto a través de los años. Su miembro principal (Alan Bown) había empezado sus primeros pasos en una banda llamada (The Embers) que hicieron base en Alemania donde tocaban asiduamente en clubes de Hamburgo junto a The Beatles, más tarde pasaría a formar parte de (John Barry Seven) que tras su disolución formaría su propia banda junto a otros integrantes de (John Barry). Pronto estarían tocando en el circuito inglés junto a otros que luego fueron famosos como en el caso de Georgie Fame. Su primer sencillo fue (Can't Let Her Go/I'm The One) y se grabó en 1965 para el sello PYE y también habría reemplazos en la banda. Pasaría un año hasta su siguiente trabajo que fue (Baby Don't Push Me/Everything's Gonna Be Alright) que tampoco tuvo repercusión alguna, siguieron trabajando y grabarían dos sencillos más en aquél 1966 (Headline News/Mister Pleasure y Emergency 999/Settle Down) ambos de calidad pero de escasa ventas. Pronto deciden grabar un Lp que se llamó (Outward Bown) en 1967, año de mucho trabajo para ellos ya que también lanzarían al mercado una serie de 45's (Gonna Fix You Good (Everytime You're Bad)/I Really Really Care, We Can Help You/Magic Hankerchief y Toyland/Technicolour Dream) este último lanzado como apoyo del álbum y grabado en en sello MGM. Lamentablemente sus intentos parecían caer en saco roto ya que no podían afianzarse en los charts ni tampoco tenían ventas masivas a pesar de la calidad de sus músicos y de su música. En 1968 estarían un poco más inactivos, solo un sencillo pondrían en el mercado (Story Book/Little Lesley) y poco a poco la carrera de la banda empezaría a tambalear, esta vez intentan bajo el sello DERAm (Still As Stone/Wrong Idea y Gypsy Girl/All I Can) las dos de 1969, pero todo sería en vano. Volverían a los estudios recién en 1971 con la edición de (Pyramid/Crash Landing) esta vez con el sello ISLAND pero no tuvo repercusión alguna y su último trabajo fue en 1975 para el sello CBS con (Rockford Files/I Don't Know). A veces el destino esta marcado por más que te esfuerces, una banda de mucha popularidad en el circuito londinense que se codeó con los más grandes pero el destino quiso que no llegarán más de ahí. Eso no quita su gran desempeño musical y profesionalidad. Este fue su primer álbum americano donde se puede escuchar sus buenas canciones, este Lp no lo defraudará...Toyland

This was a long running soul and blues influenced outfit who were very popular on the club circuit. Perhaps their finest moment was We Can Help You, a whimsical slice of late sixties pop, which surprisingly wasn't a hit - it reached No. 26 in the NME chart, leading to an appearance on "Top of The Pops", but in the week of their appearance, the company pressing the single was on strike, and consequently there were no singles in the shops! Of their other releases, Headline News was an Edwin Starr cover; Emergency 999 was played on the Northern soul scene and Gonna Fix You Good was a Little Anthony and The Imperials cover.
As you can see from the line-up information some pretty prestigious musicians passed through Bown's band. When he called it a day in 1974 he went to work for CBS Records A&R Department.
The reissue of Outward Bown on Tenth Planet includes We Can Help You, along with their version of All Along The Watchtower, which impressed Hendrix sufficiently enough for Jimi to start including it in his set, plus other goodies such as the Bee Gees influenced Sally Green. The album failed to happen, and Jess Roden left to pursue a solo career, with the band taking on a more 'progressive' sound.
The Early Years is a reissue of their Deram album and includes both sides of the Still As Stone 45 on which Jess Roden rather than Robert Palmer sings vocals.
